| “I recently was fortunate enough
to get my hands of the new dvd and manual by
Tony Reynolds “3-D Strength Training”. Tony is
known as one of the most innovative strength
coaches in the industry and he proved it with
his new program. Tony did a wonderful job of
mixing pure biomechanical logic and creative
exercise selection to meet the requirements of
various loading patterns. Tony has figured out
how to train deceleration and acceleration
positioning through these various loading
patterns. This DVD is a must on many levels.
Great job Tony!” |

Dear Athlete,
I am
proud to say that in my training and coaching career, I’ve
helped countless athletes to improve their on field performance
by properly preparing them for their sports.
I am also
proud to say I’ve played a role in raising my athletes’
performance to play at levels that have earned many of them
college scholarships.
Don’t get
me wrong. I don’t take any credit for their physical
abilities that make them great athletes. However, I do
take credit for assuring that they are not merely prepared to
play their sport but that they are capable of demonstrating
their physical abilities to the highest possible
level.
How do I
assure that my athletes are the best prepared athletes on the
court or on the field?
By
applying specific training principles that I’ve determined to
be the missing link in most athletic strength and conditioning
programs.
These are
the principles, when applied correctly, make average
athletes better, good athletes great, and great athletes
great on every single play.
You see, from my first day in
the field of strength and conditioning and athletic
preparation, I’ve been very analytical. I’ve dissect
everything, and when a training principle works, I want to know
why it works.
Let me
give you an example of what I mean.
My first
experience in the strength and conditioning field was as a
volunteer in my universities strength and conditioning
program.
After
watching the first workout, I had nothing but questions…Why do
you do that?
What is your reason for this? Is that for
everybody? How does that relate to what the athlete does
on the field? At that time, I was asking simply because it was
all new and exciting to me and I wanted to learn. After
hearing some of the answers, I walked away thinking, “Okay, I
am more confused than before I asked.”
A few years later I found
myself in Florida working at a very respectful, elite athletic
training facility. Once again, I found that my hand was
going up every 5 seconds to ask questions. However, this
time…I found that the answers always pacified the issue at
hand. However, this time…I found that the answers
always pacified the issue at hand. I always walked satisfied,
even though the answers always lead me to ask yet even more
questions.
It didn’t
take long for me to figure out what was happening. I had gotten
confused because the information being passed on to me just
didn’t make sense. In other words, it was just simply
wrong. That coach had never taken the time to assess
what his athletes truly did in their
sports.
He had
never dissected the athletes’ environment to evaluate the type
of forces that were actually encountered by the athletes.
He simply trained his athletes exactly the same way that his
mentor trained HIS athletes. Without question, he
implemented rep for rep and set for set the exact same programs
his mentor used. To me that opens the door for a lot of
problems.
Hi Tony ,
Just had to write and say a sincere "thank you" for
your 3D- DVD package ...
I have watched the DVDs several times and just love
the content and clarity of this production .
Very impressive overall , a must for any Trainers'
library (loved the bonus DVD material as well the
Manual ) 11 out of 10 !!!” |

What do
athletes really do?
Now, off
of the top of your head, tell me exactly what athletes do in
their sport? I don’t mean tell me their position. I
mean WHAT DO THEY REALLY DO as they play their sport? Don’t
be general, be very descriptive and dissect their
activities.
In what
direction do athletes apply forces when they accelerate?
What about when they decelerate? How about cutting? Swing a
bat? Tackling another athlete? Throwing a ball? Kicking a
ball?
If you
could draw lines to represent the direction of the forces that
athletes encounter, what direction would they
be?
What you
would discover is that pure vertical loading rarely exists in
sport. (Prove to me that I am wrong. I dare
you!!!) Except for the tip-off at the beginning of a basketball
game, I cannot think of any sport where the majority of force
application/absorption isn’t heavily influenced by horizontal
forces.
Time in
and time out we see the expression and absorption of horizontal
forces in sport. Why is this important? Well, let me
answer that with two more questions-Will the same muscles be
used in the same way to deal with horizontal versus vertical
forces? How will rotational forces change
things?
Here is a
very remedial example: Hold your arm straight out in front of
your body and have a friend press down on it. What
muscles are going to activate to deal with the load? Hold
your arm in the exact same starting place. Have
your friend push your hand out to the side. What muscles
are going to activate to deal with this load?
Did you
notice a difference in how you used the muscles around your
shoulder? Did you notice a difference in your abdominal
muscles and lower back? How about in your hips and
legs? What it boils down to in the end, is that the joint
angle does not provide the definitive decision on which muscles
are going to be activated.
It’s the
direction of the force that will make the final decision on
how the muscles will be activated.
Let’s take this a step
further. Assume a push up position and concentrate on
your core area (hips, abdomen, and lower back). What are your
muscles doing? Think about the how gravity pulls downward
on the body to activate your muscles in a certain pattern or
direction.
Now pick
one hand up without shifting your hips and shoulders (If you’re
strong enough!). Maintain that straight line with your
body. Now, tell me what you feel through your abs, hips,
and lower back. What are your muscles are
doing?
Supporting yourself with only one side of
your body made staying strong and stable a lot more
difficult…and impossible for many athletes.
Think
about how many times you are starting, stopping, balancing,
pushing, pulling, and throwing through only one side of the
body.
Why is
this important?
Let’s
answer the “why is this important” question by examining what
is happening in the weight rooms through North America.
There is fairly standard set of exercises you see in almost all
programs:
□
Squats-Vertical
loading
□
Bench press-Vertical
loading
□
Lunge-Primarily
Vertical
□
Pull Up-Vertical
loading
□
Leg Press-Truly vertical
if you analyze what is happening.
□
Olympic Lifts-Vertical
loading
The list
goes on!!!
Form
Follows Function
Take a
look at our own muscular anatomy and you’ll see that very few
muscles in the body have fibers that are strictly
vertical. Most have fibers that run
diagonally and horizontally
to allow athletes to produce strength in rotation and against
horizontally applied forces.

I don’t
want you to misinterpret the point I am trying make. I
am not discrediting the value of the basic exercises like
squats, presses, and Olympic lifts. Other than
the leg press, these exercises and their various forms are
foundational in my own training programs. I view these
exercises as essential for almost all my
athletes.
However, I also recognize that on their
own, they won’t produce the maximum carry over to
sport. They
will produce good carry over, no doubt, but the results will
not be the greatest given that a very big component of the
athlete’s true environment is neglected…horizontal and
rotational loading.
Horizontal and Rotational strength
exercises are the difference
makers.
They are the glue that helps tie everything
together. They are not the total picture, rather a
key (and most often neglected) piece of the
puzzle.
They
are the missing link.
They
are the difference between making the big play versus not
getting an opportunity to make the big play.
That’s
why I’ve developed my program called
3-Dimensional
Strength Training
Workout>>>
Rotational and
horizontally-directed forces are the predominant forces
experienced during most sports. These types of forces
are typically the result of momentum, acceleration and
deceleration, movement of an implement (throwing, kicking,
and catching), or contact with another athlete’s
body.
Since the
body’s muscular response to these forces is dictated by the
direction of the force. It is essential to include
horizontal and rotational loading techniques when designing
resistance training programs.
"Freakin' finally!
I see a LOT of DVDs produced by fitness
professionals and to me most everyone of them falls
short on delivering the goods. Why?
Because they only show a bunch of different
exercises and don't provide any technical clues
whatsoever as to how to do the damn thing
correctly.
Tony's DVD provides unique and practical
information that you can apply immediately. More
importantly, he teaches you the right way to do
things so your athletes are performing the
movements correctly. That means they are going to
improve their performance in less time while
staying injury free.
Isn't that what strength and conditioning programs
are supposed to do?" |
